Biometrics Institute

The Biometrics Institute is an independent, global organisation supporting the responsible use of biometric technologies.
Founded in 2001, it represents a multi‑stakeholder community spanning government agencies, financial institutions, airlines, airports, technology suppliers, academics, regulators and privacy advocates. Its network also includes international observers such as United Nations agencies, EU institutions and intergovernmental organisations.
The institute provides an unbiased platform for discussion, guidance and collaboration on biometric technology. It brings together diverse perspectives to support balanced decision‑making and responsible deployment.
Its work focuses on developing thought leadership, facilitating knowledge sharing and connecting the global biometrics community. This includes supporting organisations to understand, assess and risk‑manage biometric technologies.
Key activities include
- guidance on responsible biometric use
- knowledge transfer to members, stakeholders and the public
- global community building across users, suppliers, regulators and academics.
A core resource is the Good Practice Framework, which outlines key considerations for risk‑managing biometric technologies. This framework is designed to support organisations considering or implementing biometric solutions.
The institute also publishes thought leadership reports and practical guidance on emerging challenges, including deepfakes, morphing and online customer onboarding. These resources provide independent insights into technical, ethical and regulatory considerations.
For suppliers, the institute maintains an online directory to support visibility within the biometrics ecosystem.
Many topics are explored through in‑person and online meetings and events. Its flagship annual event is held in Sydney each May and operates under the Chatham House Rule to support open discussion.
The Biometrics Institute supports organisations seeking informed, balanced and responsible approaches to biometric technology adoption.
