Away from Keyboard (AFK) Inc. is a registered charity creating safer digital futures through advocacy, education and innovation.

Founded in regional Victoria, AFK is survivor-led and driven by the belief that digital risks are human rights risks.

Our mission is to prevent online harm and ensure technology is designed with safety and ethics at its core. We advocate nationally and globally for children, young people and women addressing urgent challenges such as online exploitation, grooming, scams and technology-facilitated gender-based violence. AFK’s work has been recognised internationally, including at the United Nations, where our Unsafe by Design framework has shaped global conversations on safety by design.

We deliver workshops, training and resources that help communities stay safe online while promoting healthier offline connections. We are also developing a free human rights due diligence (HRDD) search engine tool to help organisations align innovation with safety principles and prevent harm before it occurs.

Our vision is a world where technology uplifts rather than endangers, where digital safety is embedded in every system, and vulnerable communities are protected, empowered and connected.

Prevention is our driving force.

As a charity, we work directly with the public through workshops and advocacy, helping communities understand digital risks and build safer connections. We believe the true measure of safety is preventing harm before it occurs.

To extend this mission upstream, we are developing a free HRDD search engine tool to support businesses, NGOs and community groups in embedding safety and ethics into their use of artificial intelligence. The tool integrates national codes and standards with UN human rights frameworks to help organisations meet both local expectations and international obligations.

Users enter a concept in plain language and receive tailored analysis of risks such as child protection, accessibility, data misuse and technology-facilitated violence. Outputs include:

  • a customised ethics and safety summary
  • a sector-specific risk profile
  • actionable mitigation steps
  • harm scenario generation

This tool complements our consumer-facing programs by providing accessible, prevention-driven guidance for organisations of all sizes. It bridges global frameworks with practical solutions, ensuring technology is designed responsibly, aligns with regulatory expectations and delivers genuine social good.
